Donegal Garda Station
Architect:
Rhatigan Architects
Award Type:
Irish Architecture Awards
Location:
Donegal
This projects stand out for its laconic civic presence and its no-nonsense adaptation of the spatial culture of a thriving historic town.
Its architecture embraces the functions of the local Garda station, opening the solid reconditioned street building to the public on the pavement facing the quay and wrapping a lightly framed but protected south-west facing working wing overlooking the entrance to the back-land carpark whose edges are evolving behind the yards and coach houses at the rear of the diamond in Donegal.
This building demonstrates that thoughtful architecture can quietly and carefully edify our everyday culture with sustainable civic buildings
