Event Information
The RIAI and the Heritage Contractors Register is delighted to present their monthly series. Dr. Jason Bolton will give a live talk over Zoom platform on Hot Limes, NHLs & Historic Mortars: a Specifiers Guide on 23 June
The course will provide a working framework for architects to understand, evaluate and make informed decisions about the increasingly wide range of lime-based mortars used in conservation work; to use that knowledge to critically evaluate often conflicting advice and opinions on what is ‘best’ for a building; and be able to come to a reasoned position on the usefulness of new materials as they appear in the marketplace and on projects in coming years.
The course will provide an overview of the advantages and disadvantages of the most popular conservation mortars; and discuss the challenges in matching new materials to ‘problems’ in historic structures.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course attendees should have a knowledge of;
- Hot Limes: Advantages and Limitations
- NHLs: Advantages and Limitations
- The use of ‘hybrid’ mixes & additives to augment working and final performance characteristics of new mortars
- Historic Mortars: how to recognise different mortars, what are original and what are later interventions
- Overview of mortar performance requirements for different elements of a historic masonry structure or archaeological monument
