RIAI unveils Climate Challenge guidance while exploring Retrofit at Scale at the RIAI Conference
We are delighted to launch today, 12 October 2023, at the RIAI Conference 2023, a complementary suite of guidance for the RIAI 2030 Climate Challenge. These guides are intended to help support Architects and their Clients to sign up and work towards the targets of the Climate Challenge.
The Climate Challenge guidance includes An Architect's Guide, A Domestic Client’s Guide and A Non-Domestic Client’s Guide. Each document sets out the reasons and benefits of signing up to the Climate Challenge, how the targets apply to projects and useful guidance, tools and resources to help a practice work towards the targets.
This year’s RIAI Conference theme focuses on #Collaboration and the transformative role both architects and built environment professionals play in addressing the unprecedent challenges our society is currently facing – not only in terms of climate change, but also affordable housing and liveable cities and towns.
For the first time, the RIAI have dedicated an entire conference day to the topic of Retrofit at Scale, with speakers presenting and discussing retrofit rather than new built solutions for homes, workplaces and essential infrastructure.

Speaking of the conference, Charlotte Sheridan, President RIAI, said:
“I am delighted to see how educational the second day of our conference is, with the sole focus on Retrofit at Scale. Retrofitting offers a multitude of environmental benefits by conserving resources, reducing waste, improving energy efficiency and preserving both natural and cultural assets. It represents a responsible and sustainable approach to urban development which is of the utmost importance now and in the future. This closely aligns with our 2023 Climate Challenge and is something that everyone in our industry should be exploring.”
The theme of the Conference ‘Collaboration’ continued to be explored throughout Day 2 of the Conference. In delivering on the climate emergency we have to embed meaningful collaboration into all aspects of projects from inception to delivery. The RIAI is delighted to have contributors from client bodies and the engineering and surveying professions who are critical partners in tackling the complex issues that each building project deliver. Building is complex and to navigate the challenge we need to learn from each other and be prepared to make changes to our working methods and to the ambitions we set for projects.
