Event Information

Dublin Port 2021-2023

John O’Reilly’s solo exhibition of new oil paintings at the Axis Centre Ballymun presents Dublin Port's unique industrial landscapes. A large industrial area close to Dublin city centre, Dublin Port is like a backstage area of daily life. Due to its constant development adapting to centuries of technological and social change, these current sites may be updated or replaced in the future. The exhibition depicts them as they operate today with similar appreciation as the protected surviving 19th century Port structures. The exhibition originated with funding from the Pumphouse Bursary, an initiative between Dublin Port and Axis Centre Ballymun.

Artist Bio

A former graffiti artist, John’s early oil subjects were areas he painted graffiti in, especially abandoned and restricted sites. His work continues to explore the built environment, presenting overlooked banal spaces such as car parks and motorways. A recipient of Arts Council funding, his work is also included in the state collection. He was also commissioned by The National Gallery of Ireland to interpret a Vermeer interior as an exterior mural. Since 2008, he has exhibited five solo shows and over 80 group shows, including in Canada, Spain, China, and the U.K
