Voluntary Register of Architectural Technologists
Architects and Architectural Technologists are complementary professionals that deliver excellence in the built environment. Architectural Technologists are a key profession within the design team, often coordinating outputs from engineering and other built environment professionals with particular responsibility for the preparation of production information such as working drawings, schedules and specifications as well as site surveys, administrative procedures to do with building regulations, fire safety certificates, planning applications, the building contract, etc. Some Architectural Technologists develop specialisations in particular areas, such as specification writing, technology, materials, regulations, CAD or BIM.
The profession of Architectural Technologist is not a regulated profession in Ireland and RIAI Architectural Technologist membership is not required to undertake the profession in the State.
The RIAI Voluntary Register of Architectural Technologists provides a listing of all active RIAI Architectural Technologist Members who have opted into the voluntary register.
RIAI Architectural Technologist members are entitled to use the affix RIAI (Arch.Tech.) and may avail of the following RIAI Membership Benefits:
- RIAI Architectural Technologist marks and Brand Guidelines
- Access to the Members only area on the RIAI website
- Access to the online Good Practice Guide
- MyRIAICPD / reduced CPD costs
- Receive RIAI Member E-Bulletins – informing and updating you on changes to legislation advice on practice issues, notification of competitions, awards and events
- Architecture Ireland magazine
The RIAI supports Architectural Technologist members on the register who wish to fulfil the role of Ancillary Certifier under the Building Control (Amendment) Regulations (BC(A)R Technical Group 2, 2013).
The RIAI supports RIAI accredited educational institutions who wish to develop further accredited Architect’s Register Admission Examination programmes for architectural technologists who wish to seek entry onto the Statutory Register for Architects.
The RIAI believes that clear professional definitions will lead to better understanding of the different skills and competencies for each profession, provide clarity to the public, and provide greater consumer protection.
The standards for the education of Architectural Technologists are set out in the Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) Awards Standards – Architectural Technology (February 2016).
Entry requirements for the RIAI Register of Architectural Technologists will be established by the RIAI and all registrants will be required to abide by a Professional Code of Conduct and will undertake mandatory CPD.
