Dublin Airport (1938 - 1940)
Architect:
Desmond Fitzgerald, OPW
Award Type:
RIAI Gold Medal
Location:
Dublin
This was the first first building of the national airline Aer Lingus. Under the direction of Desmond Fitzgerald, an architectural team designed this pioneering building in a confidant international style.
The elegant and meticulous design, for what was then a relatively new building type, did not receive the international recognition it deserved when completed in 1940, due to wartime censorship.
This entire project was a deliberate attempt at ‘total design’, with the architects choosing fabric, cutlery and even menu cards.
The building is a nostalgic reminder of a time when air travel was exciting and glamorous.
