Event Information

Building on last year’s very successful event and on the principles of the Greater Galway Charter the 2024 conference will focus on Planning, Designing and Delivering the 21st Century Neighbourhood.

RIAI Members can book with a 10% discount (or a total discount of 23% if booked within the Early Bird window, ending midnight Sunday, 28 April) using the code RIAImember or via the link.

The conference will hear from a range of national and international experts who have first-hand experience of delivering lifelong liveable neighbourhoods. The conference will include the voices of a wide range of those involved in place-making, included policy makers, local representatives, architects, planners, urban designers, engineers, developers, community activists and local residents.

The discussion will pick up on one of the themes of last year looking at Emerging Galway and the potential for this city to chart a way forward for smaller cities generally.

We will hear from younger residents and a range of community groups who simply love living in solid, sustainable and walkable neighbourhoods.

The programme is available below. It is subject to change.

Conference Themes:

International Perspective: - The conference will present evolving international best practise in urban design and place-making with speakers from cutting edge smaller cities across Europe and the UK.

Planning: - It will explore recent progression in the areas of vision led and participative planning and how these new methodologies can be applied to reimagine and remake our cities, towns and neighbourhoods.

Participation: - It will examine how communities can be engaged in shaping and delivering the liveable, sustainable and affordable neighbourhoods which we so desperately need in responding to the twin challenges of climate change and housing.

Principles: - It will examine how the principles enshrined in the Greater Galway Charter can be used to support innovation in design and delivery and will look at how Galway can be an exemplar in this area.

Practise: - The two days of presentations and discussions will be of interest to Architects, Engineers, Planners, Urban Designers, Community Groups and Development Agencies, Builders and Developers, Policy Makers and all involved in looking to shape and deliver Sustainable, Liveable and Affordable future neighbourhoods in our towns and cities.

The Conference qualifies for CPD points for a number of professional bodies.
