Wood Awards Ireland 2024 Winners Announced
Celebrating their 10th anniversary in 2024, Wood Awards Ireland (WAI) recognise and award excellence in wood construction and design. Common to all awarded projects is that wood is the inherent sustainable medium.
The RIAI has been a founding partner of the Wood Awards Ireland, which are organised by Forest Industries Ireland (FII) and Rotary Ireland with support from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and Enterprise Ireland.
Speaking on the 10-year partnership, RIAI President Sean Mahon FRIAI said:
“Over the last 10 years, we have seen an evolution in how Architects are using wood as an inherent material in the design of buildings, including in a structural capacity in form of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT). Architects have developed great knowledge and skills in designing, detailing and delivering timber buildings, and these awards are a great platform to share this expertise.”
The jury for the WAI 2024 were: Ciaran O'Connor FRIAI, State Architect (Chair); Dr. Sandra O'Connell, RIAI; Simon O'Driscoll, O’Driscoll Furniture; Ruth O'Herlihy MRIAI, McCullough Mulvin Architects; Des O'Toole, FII; and John Winslow MRIAI, Donnelly Turpin Architects.
The judges sought innovation in design and excellence in execution, and proof that the wood used has been sourced in sustainably managed forests.
The winning and shortlisted projects explore the intrinsic physical properties of wood, while also developing the inherent relationship between form, technology.
At a ceremony held on 3 December at Farmleigh House, Kinsale Library was announced as the overall winner of the Wood Awards Ireland 2024. This year’s award recipients are:
