Tony Horan FRIAI - a life in Architecture

Architect Tony Horan FRIAI, a founding partner at Horan Rainsford Architects, celebrated his 90th birthday 28 November. Tony has made significant and enduring contributions to Ireland's architectural landscape. His career commenced following a period working with Ernő Goldfinger in London. Among his most prominent works is the Dublin Institute of Advanced Physics on Burlington Road (designed while an Associate Partner at Stephenson Gibney from 1967-1973), which was recently granted protected structure status by Dublin City Council.

Since establishing his own practice, Horan Cotter, in 1973, his designs have garnered extensive professional recognition, including many RIAI Awards. He was honoured with an RIAI Triennial Silver Medal for Housing (1973–76) for the Flats at Richmond Hill, Monkstown.

As a founding partner at Horan Keoghan Ryan (HKR), Tony was the principal architect responsible for the 2007 redevelopment of the Shelbourne Hotel. Tony was notably prescient in developing multiple housing typologies. For example, the Willowfields development in Sandymount exemplifies an own-door, medium-density housing model that is now a core component of contemporary compact settlement guidelines. He remains actively engaged in the field and continues to demonstrate a profound commitment to the practice of architecture.

Congratulations from the RIAI.
