RIAI Simon Open Door aims to raise €100,000 for homelessness prevention while providing access to expert architectural advice

The RIAI Simon Open Door returns in 2026, offering homeowners across Ireland a unique opportunity to receive expert advice from an RIAI Registered Architect, while supporting the vital work of Simon Communities of Ireland.

Since its launch in 2004, the nationwide campaign has generated vital funding for the Simon Communities of Ireland, helping them continue their work with individuals and families experiencing or at risk of homelessness. For a €125 donation, homeowners receive a one-hour consultation with a Registered Architect to discuss property improvements, such as extensions, refurbishments, energy upgrades, or home adaptations for all stages in life. Bookings are open now, with consultations running from 13 to 19 April. Every cent of every donation goes directly to supporting the Simon Communities of Ireland.

Kathryn Meghen, CEO of RIAI, said,

“The RIAI Simon Open-Door initiative has been running for 22 years, and its continued success is a reflection of the importance people place on their living environments. It provides a great opportunity for the architectural profession to help homeowners get the best from their living environment, whilst supporting those without a place to call home. The RIAI is very proud of the initiative.”

The campaign, which is now in its 22nd year, has raised close to €1.5 million for Simon Communities across Ireland. This year it aims to raise €100,000, supporting the critical work of the Simon Communities in Homeless prevention, tenancy sustainment and emergency accommodation, among many others. For example, in 2023, the funds raised directly contributed to the refurbishment of a one-bedroom apartment for a client through the Housing First programme, providing long-term support and stability.

Ber Grogan, Executive Director, Simon Communities of Ireland, said

“We are seeing a deeply concerning trend across Ireland as more older people face the trauma of housing insecurity. The number of people aged 65 or older in homelessness has increased by 289% in Dublin and by 475% in the West of Ireland in the ten years since 2015. To tackle this, our national housing policy must evolve to meet the needs of an ageing demographic. This means prioritising the design and adaptation of homes that offer step-free access and flexible layouts.

By taking part in the RIAI Simon Open Door, homeowners can access expert architectural advice for just €125, which is significantly less than the usual cost. Every consultation fee goes directly towards supporting services and lasting change for those most in need, so participants are not only saving money but also making a meaningful difference.”

Over the lifetime of the campaign, over 20,000 architects nationwide have generously contributed their expertise and time. Through the initiative, they’ve provided homeowners with professional advice, imaginative design ideas and clear, practical direction to help turn their home improvement plans into reality.

Dermot Bannon MRIAI, spokesperson for the RIAI, said,

“Home adaptation, reorganising and energy retrofitting is becoming an essential part of how we think about design in Ireland today. Whether it’s creating flexible spaces for all life stages, working from home, adapting a house so older family members can age in place, or reconfiguring layouts to meet changing mobility needs. Thoughtful architectural design can make a lasting difference to everyday life. Through the Simon Open Door Initiative, homeowners have the opportunity to receive expert guidance on making their homes more inclusive, sustainable and future-ready, while also supporting vulnerable people in our communities. It’s about designing homes that evolve with the families who live in them.”

Registration for the event is now open, and people are encouraged to book a consultation with an RIAI Registered Architect in their local area by visiting www.riaisimonopendoor.ie.
