Remembering RIAI Past President Seán Ó Laoire (1946-2026)

The RIAI is deeply saddened by the death of Seán Ó Laoire FRIAI on 7 April 2026, and we are sending our condolences to his family. Our sincere sympathies also to Seán’s colleagues in MOLA Architecture, who have published a tribute to him as “one of Ireland’s most influential architects and urban designers of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, whose work connected practice with wider urban thinking and public discourse.”

Seán was RIAI President from 2008-2009. He strongly believed in the benefits that quality architecture and urban design can bring to all in society. He advocated for the formal registration of the title ‘Architect’ – a key element of consumer protection – which came into law during this presidency. He was also a mentor to many in the profession.

Further information is on rip.ie where condolence messages can also be left.
