Remembering Lorcan O’Herlihy (1959–2026)
The RIAI is deeply saddened by the death of Architect Lorcan O’Herlihy. Born in Dublin, and a graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, O’Herlihy was based in LA, where he founded in 1994 his practice Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects (LOHA).
Architectural curator and critic, Raymund Ryan, described him in The Architect’s Newspaper as an Architect with a “stylish independent streak”, adding, “from his earliest days in architecture, he exuded an artistic energy as well as a certain raffish charm in his interactions with the culture and practice of architecture.”
Architect and broadcaster Dermot Bannon recalled that O’Herlihy “believed that the purpose of architecture was to strengthen our cities and their communities”
The RIAI was delighted to welcome Lorcan O’Herlihy as a keynote speaker at the RIAI Conference in 2019, where he presented his beautiful work, including the colourful apartment building Formosa1140, as well as his social housing projects for the Skid Row Housing Trust.
We are sending our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Cornelia Hayes O’Herlihy, and their twin sons, Daire and Darcy. Raymund Ryan’s obituary in The Architect’s Newspaper is available here.
