The RIAI, in collaboration with the Office of Public Works (OPW), is delighted to offer members an exclusive opportunity to visit the Four Courts Dome in Dublin. This site visit provides a rare chance to explore the ongoing conservation works on one of the city's most iconic structures.

About the Site Visit

This unique tour offers an in-depth exploration of the Four Courts Dome conservation project, currently in its final phase under the OPW’s guidance. Designed by Thomas Cooley and completed by James Gandon between 1776 and 1796, the Four Courts has witnessed significant historical events, including the 1922 Civil War fire, which led to extensive reconstruction efforts.

The current works focus on the Portland Stone capitals that ring the drum of the dome. These capitals, which support the structure above, have deteriorated over time due to historical damage. The tour will provide an up-close look at the critical restoration efforts aimed at stabilizing and preserving this architectural landmark.

Tour Highlights

  • Introduction – Meet at the West Courtyard for an overview of the project.
  • Stone Capital Review – Examine a removed stone capital and understand its structural role.
  • Historical Insights – Learn about the dome’s past, including its post-1922 reconstruction.
  • Upper Dome Access – Explore ongoing works in the upper sections of the dome.
  • Scaffold Walk – Step onto the scaffold for a firsthand look at the conservation works on the stone capitals.
  • Tour Conclusion – The visit concludes on the scaffold, with participants exiting onto the quays.

Important Notes

  • This is an active construction site. Full PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is required.
  • The tour is led by OPW architects and conservation specialists.
  • This is a live project tour, not a lecture-style presentation.

Spaces are strictly limited to 15 participants per session, so early booking is recommended.

Don’t miss this exclusive opportunity to gain insight into one of Dublin’s most significant conservation projects.
