Event Information

The RIAI present a 3 day CPD training course on the provision of Expert Witness services.

Experts involved in civil and criminal proceedings need to understand the basics of Irish law and legal procedure to work effectively and confidently and comply with various mandatory requirements. The course will demonstrate the practical implications of being an Expert Witness, providing guidance and judicial comment on the roles and responsibilities of experts

Participants will attain a 12 points CPD Certificate upon satisfactory attendance of the course.
 

Course Aim

The  aim  of  the  course  is  to  enable  participants  to  understand  the  role  of  the  Expert  Witness  and demonstrate to both instructing lawyers and the courts that they are appropriately trained and hold the core and requisite competencies to act as an expert witness.

Course Overview

  • The course will cover the following areas:
  • Types of Experts, roles and responsibilities
  • Role and regulatory framework, Irish Court system
  • Evidence – admissibility, common law implications
  • Taking instructions, appointment, managing fees, practical aspects
  • Introduction to report writing
  • Report writing skills: structure and technique
  • Overview of Alternative Dispute Resolution processes
  • Role of experts – joint reports, conferrals
  • An introduction to the Court Room
  • Preparation for the hearing – use of an existing report or preparation of new one
  • Court, Arbitration, Adjudication, other tribunals
  • Key presentation skills in court, giving evidence effectively
  • Presenting the report
  • Techniques in cross-examination

Prerequisite / Corequisite

There will be some pre-reading and recommendations for learning around the subject

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course participants should be able to:

LO1:  Irish Legal framework
Describe and navigate the relevant legal and court procedures.

LO2:  Report writing
Prepare and draft documentary evidence.

LO3:  Cross examination
Present evidence effectively under cross-examination.
Assessment Methods and Types.
Satisfactory attendance on all 3 days and participation in role plays on day 3.

Three one-day workshops with a maximum [16] participants

  • Day 1 and Day 2 at the Irish Architectural Archive, 45 Merrion Square E, Dublin 2, D02 VY60
  • Day 3 at the Hotel Clayton, Cardiff Lane, Dublin 2, Sir John Rogerson's Quay, Grand Canal Dock, Dublin 2, D02 YT21

Please note: The course will be delivered In-person, if allowable under Public Health Restrictions applicable at the time of delivery. Otherwise, it will take place in an online/remote workshop format.
