Event Information
We are pleased to present the new RIAI Environmental Induction Course (EIC), leading to RIAI Environmental Accreditation. The course will be delivered live and online by leading experts in the field of sustainable design over six weeks on Thursday and Friday mornings, starting Thursday, 6 March.
The closing date for bookings is Friday, 14 February.
Course Information
This is a new course designed for RIAI Members which acknowledges the increasingly sophisticated levels of ability Members may have in sustainable design. The aim of the course is to provide participants with greater awareness, knowledge and understanding of key concepts and techniques of sustainable design.
The course comprises 30 hours of classroom-based content organised into four pillars of six 1-hour lectures and one 1.5-hour workshop and supplemented with question-and-answer sessions and discussion throughout. In addition, each pillar will have one informal assessment (open book) and one formal assessment (open book).
The first pillar on context, legislation and leadership addresses key climate change policies, agreements and legislation at international, EU and Irish levels. Leadership in the sustainability field is addressed in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Life Cycle Costing, Circular Economy and Post-Occupancy Evaluation. The variety of Building Energy Assessment Methods and their application into practice is also explored.
Operational energy is the focus of the second pillar and covers calculation methods, DEAP as a “design tool” and the interrelationship between indoor water use and carbon emissions. Also addressed is material performance, systems of construction, and moisture risk assessment in building retrofit.
Pillar three explores embodied carbon and dives deeper into LCA, its vocabulary, standards and application in the design process. The tools to undertake LCA are explained and demonstrated alongside content that will allow participants to interrogate manufacturers’ claims via reporting systems.
The fourth pillar addresses exterior and interior environment quality, including urban ecosystems, the impact of development on landscape, and nature-based solutions. The importance of indoor air quality on human health with respect to standards, sources of pollutants and design strategies, and the interrelationship between daylight, sunlight and overheat on building geometry and fenestration is also provided.
