Event Information

Presentation by REDscape Landscape & Urbanism, Dingeman Deijs Architects, Van Paridon de Groot and Palmbout Urban Landscapes. Special guest: Henk Ovink, Special Envoy for International Water Affairs for the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The project Irish Rivers 2040 was set up to investigate a design-led approach to flood protection in Ireland. The project has been commissioned by the OPW, Dublin City Council, Fingal County Council and Cork City Council with co-funding from the Creative Industry Fund in the Netherlands and several Dutch offices. These include Dingeman Deijs Architects, Palmbout Urban Landscape, Van Paridon de Groot Landscape Architects and REDscape Landscape and Urbanism who led the initiative for the project.

The study applies the Dutch design experience to the Irish situation using working examples in which flood protection, amenity enhancement and water quality management are combined. This ‘Dutch method’ uses a highly integrated design approach and seeks to promote sustainable values and long-term aims for flood protection.

The aim of the webinar is to disseminate the learnings from the study looking at four case studies which demonstrate how flood protection in urban, suburban, and coastal areas can be approached. It is an interactive webinar that welcomes feedback and participation and wishes to explore how the design-led approach can be better facilitated by local authorities and its partners. The webinar is to be moderated by planner, Conor Norton.
