The RIAI, in collaboration with the Heritage Contractors Register, will host a live CPD session, exploring how Building Regulations can be applied in a conservation-led manner when reusing protected structures on 28 October hosted over Zoom platform. The session will be led by Fergal McGirl, with additional insights from Building Control Officers Garret McDermott and Pat Nestor.

Course Aim
The course aims to demonstrate practical approaches to achieving Building Regulations compliance in protected structures and constructive engagement with local authority Building Control Officers.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course attendees will be able to:
- Address different Building Control requirements or different elements of a project
- Evaluate alternative means of compliance with the building regulations in historic buildings
- Adopt strategies for engaging with local authority Building Control Officer.
Speaker
Fergal McGirl, FRIAI
Fergal McGirl, FRIAI is an RIAI Grade 2 Conservation Architect and RIAI Fellow in private practice based in Dublin. A graduate from DIT Bolton St. (now TU Dublin) in 1994, he has extensive experience in conservation-led design, having worked with Richard Hurley & Associates and later Arthur Gibney & Partners. His practice has a focus on heritage/conservation projects and provides consultancy to design teams. Fergal has been a member of the RIAI Historic Buildings Committee since 2018 and current serves as its secretary. He regularly contributes to conferences and lectures, including those for the Heritage Council, Building Limes Forum, Irish Georgian Society, Galway City Council, RIAI and the TUS Energy Renovation for Traditional Buildings programme

The aim of this CPD series is to support the maintenance of a high level of professional competence among practitioners whose work involves protected structures and other significant elements of the architectural heritage. The seminars focus on both the philosophy of conservation and the management of materials on conservation projects.
