This course consists of recordings of a live CPD, hosted by the RIAI on 26 November 2024.
Course aim
This course aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the role of zinc and lead in the conservation of heritage structures, with a focus on McKee Barracks. Participants will learn about material selection, alternative approaches, and minimal intervention strategies that help preserve historical integrity while ensuring structural longevity.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this CPD course, attendees will:
- Understand the principles and challenges of using zinc and lead in the conservation of historical buildings.
- Be able to evaluate alternative approaches to the use of these materials in heritage contexts.
- Gain practical knowledge of applying a minimal repair strategy in the conservation process, including how to balance historical preservation with functional integrity.
- Develop an awareness of the craftsmanship and techniques involved in restoring heritage roofing and cladding elements.
Speakers
Eamon McCarney, FRIAI, is the Managing Director of Taylor McCarney Architects. He has been involved in the conservation works at McKee Barracks since 2012, including the restoration of the historical zinc flèche, brick manufacture, and the historical fabric conservation.
Aidan Boylan is the Managing Director of Edgeform Metals Ltd, with over 40 years of experience in the architectural metals industry. A specialist in zinc, copper, and stainless steel, he has been at the forefront of supplying and installing metalwork for roofing and cladding projects across Ireland.
