RIAI Conservation / Meet the Craftsman CPD Series: McKee Barracks – Zinc and Leadwork in Conservation by Eamon McCarney and Aidan Boylan

The RIAI, in collaboration with the Heritage Contractors Register, is delighted to present the next installment in the monthly RIAI Conservation / Meet the Craftsman CPD Series. This session will feature expert insights from Eamon McCarney (FRIAI) and Aidan Boylan (Managing Director, Edgeform Metals Ltd), focusing on the use of zinc and lead in the conservation of heritage buildings, using McKee Barracks, Dublin, as a detailed case study.

Attendees will gain practical knowledge of the materials, techniques, and conservation strategies used to preserve the historical fabric of this iconic structure. This CPD offers an invaluable opportunity to explore the craftsmanship behind conservation practices and will include a live Q&A with the speakers.

Course aim

This course aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the role of zinc and lead in the conservation of heritage structures, with a focus on McKee Barracks. Participants will learn about material selection, alternative approaches, and minimal intervention strategies that help preserve historical integrity while ensuring structural longevity.

Speakers

Eamon McCarney, FRIAI, is the Managing Director of Taylor McCarney Architects. He has been involved in the conservation works at McKee Barracks since 2012, including the restoration of the historical zinc flèche, brick manufacture, and the historical fabric conservation.

Aidan Boylan is the Managing Director of Edgeform Metals Ltd, with over 40 years of experience in the architectural metals industry. A specialist in zinc, copper, and stainless steel, he has been at the forefront of supplying and installing metalwork for roofing and cladding projects across Ireland.
