Course Aim

The aim of the course is to give an introduction to working with National Monuments and the challenges that they present to architects.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course attendees should have a knowledge of; an appreciation of how working with monuments differs from the work that architects undertake in everyday conservation practice;  the expanded regulatory environment; the differences in objectives and outcomes; the implications for the composition of project teams.

Speaker

Margaret Quinlan, FRIAI

Margaret Quinlan is an RIAI Grade 1 Conservation Architect in private practice, dealing with historic and contemporary buildings. A UCD graduate, she completed the UCD degree Master of Urban and Building Conservation in 1991. She has lectured for UCD, RIAI, the Irish Georgian Society and other bodies. She is co-author of two volumes in the Advice Series published by Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage, Ruins: the conservation and repair of masonry ruins and Disaster: A guide to prevention and preparedness in the historic built environment. She was awarded the RIAI Conservation and Restoration Medal for her work on the Main Guard, Clonmel, a national monument.
