Event Information

The RIAI and the Heritage Contractors Register will host a live CPD focused on Conservation-led masterplan for an urban brownfield site at the former CIE lands in Cork, jointly presented by Gareth O’Callaghan, MRIAI and Susan Dawson, MRIAI.

Course Aim

The aim of the course is to gain an appreciation of how the industrial heritage of a site can be integrated in a new emergent urban quarter in Cork city. How building conservation interfaces with the complexities of answering a client brief.

Learning Outcomes 

On completion of this course attendees should have a knowledge of Challenges associated with a complex urban site that contains a number of Protected Structures.

Speakers

Gareth O’Callaghan, MRIAI is a director of JCA Architects and is a Grade 1 conservation architect and member of the RIAI Historic Buildings Committee.

Gareth has many years’ experience of working as Conservation Architect on multi-disciplinary design teams, providing specialist advice to architects, engineers and planners on projects ranging from bridges to churches, castles, universities, schools and military fortifications.

Susan Dawson, MRIAI Associate Director O’Mahony Pike Architects

Susan graduated from Dublin School of Architecture, DIT in 1998 with a first class honours degree, winning the Ormond Medal for Architecture. After working for Paul Keogh Architects for 4 years, she joined O’Mahony Pike Architects in 2003.  Susan is a member of the RIAI, winning the Deirdre O’Connor Medal for Professional Practice in 2001. Susan has particular experience of complex mixed-use projects involving sensitive sites, protected structures, public infrastructure and phased delivery programmes.  She has considerable experience working as both masterplanner and project architect and applies her knowledge of economic, statutory and physical context to all projects, generating site specific, appropriate design solutions.  She has extensive experience managing large complex projects and co-ordinating multi-disciplinary design teams.
