The RIAI present a CPD talk by Richard McLoughlin, focusing on the adaptation of a derelict convent building into 10 apartments within a wider development of 52 units for Sophia Housing Association. This project forms part of a number of recent regeneration initiatives in the town centre of Portlaoise
Course Aim
The aim of the course is to show how high residential quality was achieved while maintaining the legibility of the historic layout and respecting the layered history of a building and site with origins in the 16th century.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, attendees should have knowledge of the challenges involved in repurposing a significant historic building in accordance with conservation principles.
About Richard McLoughlin
Richard is a Grade 1 accredited conservation architect. He studied architecture in Dublin and completed a master’s degree in conservation in Berlin, where he worked for many years. He co-founded Lotts Architecture in 2004 and works throughout Ireland on conservation projects large and small, both as a conservation consultant and as a lead architect. He is a member of the RIAI Historic Building Committee and Conservation Accreditation Board, and a board member of the Irish Georgian Society.

Terms and Conditions
Confirmation is subject to the event fee being finalised. Cancellation fees calculated at 50% of the estimated total bill will be charged for confirmed bookings cancelled less than 5 working days before the planned event. A replacement person can attend instead. Cancellations made the day prior to an event will be charged 75% of the total estimated bill. Please note that no-shows will be charged the full fee. All cancellations must be confirmed in writing by email. RIAI will not be liable for any costs in the event of a course being rescheduled.
