Thursday, 1st September 2016: Carole Pollard, President of the Royal Institute of Architect (RIAI) speaking at the #UrbanFutures conference, organised jointly by the Academy of Urbanism (AOU) and the RIAI, said:

The action plan for housing ‘Rebuilding Ireland’ has ambitious targets for the resolution of our housing crisis. The RIAI commends the Minister for the integrated approach to the development of the action plan.  However, development of sustainably communities is at risk without the use of architects’ important skills in creating attractive cities, towns and villages.

One third of local authorities in Ireland have no architects employed, this needs to change. Architects need to be involved in the planning and development process to ensure we have better built communities.

An urgent response is required to address the housing crisis, we must focus on delivering quality housing in sustainably communities so we don’t end up paying the price for bad building and planning decisions.”

Minister for Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government, Simon Coveney, TD, addressed the conference on 1 September and outlined the Government's action plan for housing ‘Rebuilding Ireland’, saying:

"This action plan is ultimately focused on delivering more homes and includes more than 80 separate actions structured under five main pillars each targeting a specific area of the housing system for attention. The Plan provides practical and readily implementable actions that aim to increase the annual housing supply to 25,000 unit per annum by 2021."
