Competition Success for Niall McLaughlin Architects in Oxford

Published: Friday, November 16, 2012

Niall McLaughlin Architects have won a new competition to design and complete the second of two quads at St Cross College, Oxford. Niall McLaughlin Architects' entry for the competition completes the second of two quads at St Cross College, Oxford, which is currently only enclosed by buildings on two sides. The L-shaped proposal is broken down into smaller buildings, allowing the 50 study bedrooms in the upper floors to form clusters of four and equally reducing the visual impact of the building exterior. Shared kitchens sit in the gaps between the clusters. All common spaces are located at ground floor level, which include a lecture theatre, seminar rooms, a library and a cafe. These spaces enjoy direct access onto the informal and richly planted garden-quad. St Cross College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford in England.
