Event Information

On the 13th November 2017, Greek Architect and past president of UIA, Vassilis Sgoutas, will talk with Shane O’Toole about his book A Journey with the Architects of the World. The book was launched at the UIA World Congress on the 6th September and is available in the RIAI bookshop. It is a fascinating personal commentary, through lectures and articles, on the diverse contributions that can be made by both architects and architecture in pursuit of a more equitable, just and sustainable world.

All are welcome, particularly older and younger architects, but as places are limited please confirm attendance with Claudia Stokes O'Dwyer codwyer@riai.ie.

About Vassilis Sgoutas

Received two of the best building awards given by the Ministry of Public Works, as well as the creative housing award given by the Ministry of Environment. Has participated in several activities of the UIA and was its President between 1999 – 2002. Has been actively involved in matters related to aesthetics, the environment and the disabled. In 2007, the UIA launched the “Vassilis Sgoutas Prize” rewarding architects who have contributed to the betterment of living conditions in areas below the level of poverty. He is Fellow Member of the Australia, Azerbaijan, Canada, China, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Mexico, Panama, Philippines, Russia, South Africa and USA architects institutes. Has been awarded the medal of the Magnesia Chapter of the Technical Chamber of Greece for his lifelong service to architecture.

A Journey with the Architects of the World
Through speeches, articles and interviews, this book highlights some of the more significant considerations that have run parallel with Vassilis Sgoutas’ own steps in architecture. It also includes a Random Diary, where the focus is not on what was said or written, but rather on experiences and thoughts that have emanated from events related to architects and to architecture. Although this book is a personal book, it is also a mirror of the parallel roads of many architects. Through its pages, glimpses can be caught of the more recent history of the UIA, a unique professional organisation that brings together the architects of the world, in pursuit of common ideals and targets. Memory is our wealth. Having on record these texts and events helps rediscover how our priorities have changed. And how they differ across the globe. In reading between the lines one will be able to gauge what has been the legacy of actions, or inaction, and where architects, as individuals and as a profession, have had a positive influence on the advancement of causes. So it is a little more than mere  history, it is also an awakening call.

This event is organized by the UIA Architecture for All Work Programme and the RIAI Universal Design Task Force.
