The RIAI, in partnership with Joseph Little Architects, is pleased to announce the launch of Designing Low-Energy Domestic Refurbs - Optimising long term value for your Client, an intensive one day programme designed specifically for professionals in the field of architecture.

Course Aim:
The aim of the course is to give attending architects practical and focused tips and tools to design better energy-efficient refurbishments, and to be able to prove the value of their design to the client.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Lifetime planning for refurbishments
  • Using the SEI grant system
  • Optimising the Client’s money
  • Learning to use DEAP as a design tool**
  • Air tightness in old buildings and the regulations
  • Back to the basics of building physics – thermal performance (U, Lamdda & Y-values), condensation & health
  • Understanding which insulations suit which refurbishment
  • Dispelling technical myths and misconceptions
  • Ventilation systems, heating controls
  • New, better ways of calculating payback and of comparing alternate proposals (with accompanying software)
  • Giving the Client advise on refurbs appropriate to their lifestyle

**Attendees should note that they are expected to have a basic familiarity with using the DEAP system before attending the course. A sample DEAP exercise will be issued as pre-learning in advance of the course.

The course is delivered by the means of lectures and workshops with preparatory pre and post-learning.

Attendees on the course will be receive a financial analysis software tool specifically designed to compare one refurbishment (or new-build project) with another, allowing for construction costs, VAT, fee grants, future inflation and energy cost increases.  The tool may be used as both an internal design tool and presented as proof of value in a client meeting.  Outputs are in table, figure and graph formats.

Course Presenters:
Mr. Joseph Little BArch, MRIAI, MSc Archit. AEES, – Joseph Little Architects.
Mr. Beñat Arregi BArch (EHU/UPV), – Joseph Little Architects.
