The event is organised along the four overlapping themes of creativity, community and well-being, placemaking, and the economy.

  • The first four days (Nov 5th-8th) of Dig are based in Kilkenny.
  • On the final day (Nov 9th), activity shifts to Dublin.
  • On Nov 7th, the placemaking and economic sessions will take place in the Set Theatre, Kilkenny. Relevant workshops and tours take place on Nov 8th.

Structured CPD points for RIAI Members: Nov 5th - 1 point, Nov 7th – 4 points, Nov 8th – 3 points.

Four day and single day tickets are available.

Dig is a collaboration between the Heritage Council, Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Department of Communities NI, Fáilte Ireland, Institute of Archaeologists of Ireland, Transport Infrastructure Ireland, and Dublin City Council. It is being project managed by the Irish Walled Towns Network and is receiving support from Creative Ireland.

Dig is a key part of the programme of events for the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018.

Programme Objectives:
To provide architects a greater understanding of the complexities of working with overground and underground archaeology. A greater understanding of how to work with archaeologists, so as to enhance the quality of projects.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course students will have knowledge of:-

  • Building conservation
  • Managing archaeology
  • Incorporating archaeology into designs
  • Working cooperatively with archaeologists
