On January 1, 2019, the Nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) Standard, as transposed into Part L of the Building Regulations, became the new minimum standard for commercial buildings in Ireland. It is the first change in minimum standards for the conservation of fuel and energy of non-domestic buildings in ten years and is a significant jump. To support designers in this step change, Dublin School of Architecture of Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin), presents a one-day conference, on 6th March 2019 in Páirc Uí Chaoimh, Cork City.

CPD Points: 8 structured points

Conference Aim:
The aim of the Conference is to provide attendees with a good knowledge of the nZEB standard and design strategies and technical solutions that are available to them. We intend to show how engagement with nZEB is not just a technical challenge, but also a design opportunity that architectural offices can turn to their advantage.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the Conference attendees should have a good overall knowledge of how nZEB compliance is achieved, an increased awareness of the design approaches best suited to achieving nZEB compliance, and a range of resources that can help them to achieve it. Leaders in architectural offices will have new insights into how to manage nZEB compliant projects and upskilling of their teams.

Event Format:
The event is planned in four sessions over one day. All sessions will conclude with a Q+A session. Refreshments will be served beforehand, at all breaks, and lunch in the middle of the day. A small range of exhibits will also be available for viewing.

Session One titled ‘Regulations and New Thinking’ introduces the nZEB Standard and the challenge of new thinking. Session Two ‘Case Studies’ features three sets of case nZEB studies, Session Three is delivered as two breakout sessions: the first presents four ‘nZEB Technical Solutions’, while the other breakout session ‘Re-orienting to nZEB’ is a roundtable event for practice directors and associates to discuss design culture and upskilling to nZEB through discussion with peers and international experts. It will be a facilitated session. The final session is titled ‘Beyond nZEB’. The two keynote speakers Helmut Meyer of Transsolar (Germany) and Sebastian Moreno-Vacca of A2M (Belgium) will emphasise the architectural design freedom that upskilling and engagement with nZEB (or Passive House) Standard can bring.

Joseph Little, MRIAI, Dublin School of Architecture says “A central message of the Conference is, perhaps surprisingly, that integrated energy design and earlier collaboration to the super-low energy standard of nZEB can re-inforce the primacy of architectural design. Rather than a pursuit of technical compliance alienating or limiting design, the opposite can happen.
