The RIAI practice committee for BIM, in conjunction with the CITA BIM Group and the Department of Education and Skills, Planning & Building Unit, are carrying out a ‘BIM Workshop’ from 1 to 4 November in the RIAI, with a fully collaborative design team of industry consultants. Leading up to the workshop, the team will explore and investigate some of the BIM software tools and processes available, to assess the potential benefits to the design process. A final workshop presentation will take place on 9 November (morning) at the RIAI.

The workshop aims to showcase BIM as a more efficient and effective way for project teams to collaborate, promoting a higher level of understanding and adoption of BIM within the profession and construction industry. The project team will take the standard components of a GRD (Generic Repeat Design) primary school, and carry out a 4-day collaborative design workshop to develop a new design proposal that optimizes site conditions and tests some innovative ideas and layouts. The team will demonstrate some of the BIM software tools available that easily allow information to be exchanged between the various project stakeholders, enabling quick analysis and validation of the design against technical requirements for energy performance, environmental conditions, structural stability and cost certainty.

All RIAI Members are welcome to drop in to the 4-day workshop between 9.30am – 5.30pm, from 1st to 4th November. This is a drop-in workshop and no prior booking is necessary. Attendees can claim Structured CPD points if they attend for 30minutes or more and sign in.

Interested parties will be invited to come into the workshop during the 4-days, to see the BIM collaboration process in action, and talk to the consultants involved. At the end of the workshop, the project team will give a presentation on the 9th November (morning) to a high profile audience of government and industry leaders, reporting on some of the lessons learned and highlighting the benefits that BIM can provide to the construction procurement process. The overall objective is to raise the level of understanding of BIM within government and industry, to gain support for the development of BIM processes & Technologies, and drive the industry to provide world class services to both national and international markets.

The OPW will be ‘official observers’ of the BIM Workshop, and will report back at the Final Presentation on the 9th November.
