Event Information

You might be interested in attending a lecture to be given by John Redmill, Conservation Architect, to the Irish Georgian Society in Dublin on the evening of Wednesday 9th March, at 7pm, as a precursor of a possible visit this year; all will be extremely welcome.

The lecture - ‘”At Their Majesties’ Command” – the Royal Buildings of Ireland’ - is about the various buildings constructed here either for, or on the orders of, the British Crown, starting with Dublin Castle after the conquest of Richard Strongbow in 1172, then Trinity College, ordered by Elizabeth I, Jigginstown for Charles I, the Royal Hospital Kilmainham for Charles II, the Old Parliament House of 1727, the Vice-Regal Lodge & other 18th century buildings, those for the visit of George IV in 1821 [which was somewhat of a disaster!], and finally a number for the visits of Queen Victoria, finishing with the present-day Government Buildings in Upper Merrion Street, of which the foundation stone was laid by Edward VII in 1907 and was opened by George V in 1911. Some slightly irreverent accounts of these visits will be recited! One of the IGS members will be bringing to the lecture the spade used by members of the Royal family to plant trees here in 1911.

The lecture will take place in the Helen Roe Theatre at 63 Merrion Square [the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland], starting at 7pm – just telephone Doreen McNamara of the Irish Georgian Society on 01 6767053 to reserve a place.

John Redmill FRIAI has his own practice in Dublin, where he lived since 1978, and is a member of the RIAI’s Historic Buildings Committee. He has been the Chairman of the London Chapter of the Irish Georgian Society since 1990.
