The Jackson Library, Oxford
Sustainability and decarbonisation guided the sensitive retrofit of Oxford University’s historic Jackson Library. Deteriorated fabric was restored or replaced with low-carbon natural materials such as timber and sheep fleece, improving comfort and energy efficiency. New clerestory windows enable natural cross-ventilation. Solar gain is managed with automated blinds, and a ground source heat pump provides heating.
Biodiversity was enhanced in the garden, benefiting both occupants and the increasingly varied species of wildlife. Social sustainability was addressed through improved accessibility for all users across the historic site. The exquisite detailing of the timber linings, guardings and bookcases highlights the intrinsic beauty of simply crafted oak joinery in this modest but important project.
