Mulranny - .WAY
This project originated as the RIAI Town Challenge Award for Mulranny TidyTowns, a commission developed by the RIAI Urban Design Committee that pairs Architects with TidyTowns groups to develop urban design solutions. It began as a spatial plan for Mulranny town centre but expanded to encompass research on sustainable adaptation to climate and community change in this coastal town on Europe's western periphery, which faces relentless Atlantic weather fronts and increasing climate change impacts.
This beautifully presented project is truly deserving of an award for its layered approach to analysis, using innovative multi-media research methodology. It employs photography, cartography, drawing, painting, analytic animation, digital modelling, measured survey work, and physical landscape models crafted from local quarry stone dust. This comprehensive approach demonstrates how diverse forms of analysis and representation can deepen our understanding of complex environmental and social challenges in vulnerable settings.
