Monaghan Peace Campus

This public building acts as a gateway in Monaghan town, creating a strong urban edge to a new pedestrian street and stage area at the entrance level, adjacent to the bus station. The design integrates a series of public uses to create a campus setting within a single built form. The internal layout of the campus has maximised natural light and framed a series of views towards the town, woodland and drumlins of the county. Secondary rest space provides the ‘living room’ with incidental gathering spaces to encourage social interaction across the community.

The Architects’ response to this complex brief – a singular sculptural built form made primarily of brick and zinc – purposefully creates a unifying element within the town’s existing fabric and supports its urban regeneration.

Aside from the Peace Campus being a striking work of architecture, it is evident that Universal Design has been given careful consideration throughout this building. It is simple and intuitive to use, incorporating generous and clear circulation throughout. Comfortable stairs and lifts are in close proximity to each other to give full access to all parts of the building. Wayfinding is provided in the form of multi-lingual colour-coded and pictorial signage. Additionally, there is good colour contrast along with induction hearing loops. Seating is located throughout the building to provide resting places. Housing several different functions, this building offers good flexibility in its use. The Peace Campus is a welcome addition to Monaghan town, serving people of a wide range of ages and abilities.
