Programme Objectives:

This 12 hour e-learning programme covers the essential aspects of Part L of the Irish Building Regulations, providing a sound understanding of this rapidly changing 'pilar' of the building design profession in Ireland.

Programme Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this course the participant will be able to:

1. Describe the reasons why energy efficiency is important in terms of environmental protection and summarise how Part L of the Building Regulations have changed in the past decade.

2. Explain key fundamentals of building fabric heat loss, including U-value calculations and acceptable thermal bridge details.

3. Outline importance of building airtightness, describe the testing method used in Ireland and appreciate the impact of airtightness on ventilation requirement.

4. Explain key fundamentals of building services (Part F and J), including heating, hot water and ventilation systems.

5. Define renewable energy requirements in Part J and list typical alternative scenarios that achieve compliance.

6. Appreciate the principles of a building energy rating (BER) and how the DEAP programme calculates compliance with Part L.

7. List typical measures using a case-study dwelling that are required to achieve compliance with Part L of the 2011 Building Regulations for EPC and CPC.

8. Elaborate important considerations for construction quality and commissioning of services.

9. Demonstrate understanding of how Part L relates to refurbishment of existing buildings.

10. Compare Part L with other enery performance standards, including Passive House.
