Programme Objective

6.5 hour e-learning programme covering the essential aspects of compliance with Part L of the Irish Building Regulations as part of the Building Control (Amendment) Regulations - BC(A)R. 

Programme learning outcomes

Module 1 – Part L and Environmental Protection

  • Discuss the Importance of Fuel and Energy Conservation
  • Introduce the EU Legislative Background and EPBD
  • Describe the role of the SEAI and the development of DEAP
  • Give an overview of the BER system

Module 2 – Building Fabric Heat Loss

  • Define thermal transmittance and the U-value
  • Highlight the Backstop U-values required by our current Part L
  • Show the means by which the U-value for Windows can be determined
  •  Use U-values to determine Annual Heat Loss and boiler Power requirements
  • Define Thermal Bridging using examples
  • Demonstrate how to determine Thermal Bridge coefficients
  • Calculate the DEAP input for Thermal Bridging

Module 11 – Introduction to the BC(A)R

  • Describe explain the CIRI system for contractors

The Building Regulations and BC(A)R are a cornerstone of Architects’ education in Ireland, and Part L has been updated a number of times in the past decade. This programme thus supports the RIAI CPD needs.
