The Necessary Contract is a book of critical essays by Grainne Hassett, Researcher under the Kevin Kieran Arts Council OPW Bursary for Architectural Research. The essays examine how we practice when we practice; the book scrutinises the process by which certain architects and artists push forward the art/architectural project, from inception, through tectonic practice to realisation. The book concerns itself with how architects do what they do; that is, the practice conventions and methodologies, and what this means in the end. This is explored through a parallel examination of how the artists Bridget Riley and Donald Judd do the same thing. In the end, the research focuses particularly on the relationship of artist/architect to their methodology in terms of establishing new or breakthrough work.
