Pivot Dublin: When is a Chair not a Chair
Published: Tuesday, August 09, 2011
ICSID, who will bestow the prestigious designation of World Design Capital for 2014 later this year, visited Dublin in July. Dublin is short-listed alongside Bilbao and Capetown and ICSIS judges Dilki de Silva and Martin Darbyshirean spent two busy days in the Irish Capital, meeting political leaders, including Taoiseach Enda Kenny, as well as architects and designers from all disciplines. The project has been initiated by Dublin City Architect, Ali Grehan with the support of all four local authorities in the Greater Dublin area.
The ICSID visit culminated in a special ‘pop up’ dinner in the Hugh Lane Gallery’s impressive sculpture hall under the creative direction of Jonathan Legge and Barry Sheehan. Curated by Red & Grey Design and The Small Print, the tablemats were designed by a variety of Irish creatives, while An Bord Bia created a delicious menu of Irish food.

The conversation point were chairs of all shapes and sizes, which were brought by the guests and ranged from mass produced to bespoke creations for the night, and from low budget chairs, dating from the ‘last recession’ (Michelle Fagan, Gary Lysaght and Paul Keogh) to contemporary Irish design, including Simon O’Driscoll’s beautiful DC Chair in Irish Oak, originally designed for Dublin City University Student Restaurant. Designs for the tablemats can be viewed on www.pivotdublin.com
