New Urban Landmark: National Paediatric Hospital

Published: Tuesday, August 09, 2011

The new National Paediatric Hospital on the site of the existing Mater Hospital campus on Eccles Street has been recently submitted to An Bord Pleanála for planning approval.

Designed by O’Connell Mahon Architects and NBBJ Architects, it will provide a world-class national healthcare facility for children and is a major element of the government’s national healthcare strategy. The hospital will have 392 inpatient beds over 16 storeys and a four storey underground carpark of almost 1000 car parking spaces for patients visitors and staff within the hospital.

Designed as an urban landmark, with its upper levels visible from many parts of the city, the overall form and architecture is driven by both urban design and healthcare requirements. The curved form glass structure, was designed as a soft ethereal shape, a dynamic presence on the City skyline, but one which also provides the most favourable inpatient environment for the nursing of children in single room ward accommodation.
