A table with hurleys for legs, a dress designed by an up-and-coming Irish fashion designer loved by Lady Gaga, and a state-of-the art 3D printer that uses ordinary A4 paper all represented Ireland in a prestigious international design festival in Budapest from 1 to 9 October. Having helped to create Dublin's bid for World Design Capital Bob Gray and architect Emma Curley were asked by Budapest Design Week to curate Ireland's contribution to their headline exhibition.
Budapest Design week 2011 saw 60,000+ visitors enjoy THE COLOURS OF EUROPE IN OBJECTS, an exhibition created to showcase Europe's innovative elite in the now global design autumn design season. Budapest Design Week, which has become an event on the European Design calendar.
Curley and Gray believe that design starts with the user’s perspective, visualises clear goals, solves complex problems and prototypes solutions in context. "It is not simply about developing an aesthetic or making a statement, it is a process you use to create value and change, explains RIAI architect Emma Curley. "Our approach to the Budapest Design Week exhibition was to choose objects that relate to our strengths of conversation, storytelling, empathy, humour, observation, connection and optimism", adds Bob Gray.
