EFAP Residence at the RIAI: Nicola Russi
Published: Tuesday, August 09, 2011
EFAP’s ‘Converging Territories’ is an EU pilot-project in association with the RIAI, CCEA - Prague and Point Ephémere - Paris for architects’ mobility in Europe with a view to promoting cultural diversity and fostering intercultural dialogue. The Italian architect and urban designer Nicola Russi is currently in Dublin, carrying out research at the RIAI as part of the EFAP project. Dr Russi runs an architecture studio in practice in Milan, Laboratorio Permanente, which recently completed a crèche at Bari Airport and contributed to the new masterplan for Milan. He also teaches urban design at Politecnico di Milano.
The Italian architect considers Dublin a “European capital of new architecture” and credits Grafton Architects, who designed Università Bocconi in Milan, with giving Dublin “a good start in becoming known as an architecture capital”. “Fifteen years ago it was the Netherlands, and before then Spain and Portugal, now it is Dublin where new architecture can be seen”, says Russi. His research project will examine how architects can use their progressive thinking and problem solving skills to make an impact on the city. The urban designer, who visits Dublin for the first time, argues that someone coming from outside will have a different perspective: “I want to look at everything, find connections between things, and then enforce or cut some of these connections.”

The pilot project will test how EU level funding can provide added value in supporting transnational mobility, and consequently contribute to the preparation of the Culture Programme for the next programming period beyond 2013.
