Event Information
N.B. This event has already taken place.

A design symposium and screening of Eames films will be held Monday Feb 15th as part of the major conference 'arts research: publics and purposes' (Feb 15 - 19).
The symposium (2-5 pm) will be chaired by Ali Grehan, City Architect, DCC. It comprises a panel of four speakers and then a keynote address by Eames Demetrios, the grandson of the celebrated designers Charles and Ray Eames who now runs the Eames office, Eames Foundation and is also a film maker and 'geographer-at-large'.
The other 4 speakers trouble prevailing definitions of design and its relationship to the public, proposing variously that design is a form of critical philosophy, that our current concept of the user is one-dimensional and that in fact the entire definition of design and the typical split between producer/user should be overhauled in favour of design as a form of co-conspiracy.
From 6 – 8 pm, we are holding a special evening event to focus on films by and about the celebrated American mid-century designers Charles and Ray Eames. Introduced and programmed by their grandson, film-maker Eames Demetrios, the schedule includes House after Five Years of Living, Powers of Ten, Design Q and A and a number of Demetrios’s films on Eames architecture and design.
