RIAI Education Policy
The RIAI Statement of Policy on Architectural Education sets out the Institute’s position on the education, training and continuing professional development of architects and architectural technicians and on the promotion of architecture in society.
The Policy document defines the RIAI’s requirements for academic education, practical training and assessment in architecture. These are based on the international standards of UNESCO, the International Union of Architects (UIA) and of the EU. The aim is to promote standards of excellence in architectural education and the practice of architecture in Ireland.
It also sets the parameters for promoting awareness and understanding of architecture in society as a whole, so as to involve the public also in the promotion of high standards in architecture.
Finally it describes the role and responsibilities of the RIAI’s Board of Architectural Education.
The current Policy was adopted by RIAI Council on 14 May 1999 and Amended by the Council 18 May 2001. In 2008, with the introduction of registration under the Building Control Act 2007, the RIAI was designated as the registration body for architects and the competent authority under Directive 2005/36/EC on the Recognition of Professional Qualifications. The Policy must now be reviewed to talk account of these new circumstances.

The quality of a graduate’s practical experience is the single most important factor contributing to successful completion of the final stage of professional formation. The RIAI Policy on Post-Graduate Professional Training is intended to provide information and guidance on graduate’s practical experience to students and graduates, RIAI members and practices, Schools of Architecture and of Architectural Technology, and State agencies with roles in education, training and employment.
