Event Information
The BIM Gathering will take place in Dublin on 14/15 November and the organisers have launched a call for papers with a deadline of 22 February.
The BIM Gathering is a 2-day conference with keynote addresses from Industry experts, presentations of academic papers, industry case studies and discussion workshops focused on particular sectors in the AEC community, to understand the implication and return on investment of leveraging BIM Technology in planning, design, construction and operations of built infrastructure. The conference is an excellent opportunity for Irish companies to showcase their skills to an international audience.

Authors are invited to submit an abstract of 200-500 words in one or more of the above outlined topics. The deadline for abstract submission is midnight 22nd February 2013. The CITA BIM Gathering is organized as a high quality conference with an outstanding board of Scientific Committee members to ensure a high academic standard of published papers. Papers will be blind peer-reviewed. Accepted and presented papers will be included in an ISBN conference ebook. Selected papers may be published in special issue academic journals.

The RIAI present a training course on the use of DEAP to demonstrate compliance with Part L of the Building Regulations.

Course Aim:
This one-day course is aimed specifically at those who have no previous knowledge of the DEAP (Dwelling Energy Assessment Procedure) method or software for producing residential BER certificates but who wish to gain a broad understanding of how DEAP works, specifically with regard to achieving compliance with Part L 2011.
The course is intended to provide those attending with a basic understanding of how DEAP works and how DEAP is used as a Part L compliance tool with particular focus on Part L requirements for
• Whole dwelling performance (MPEPC / MPCPC targets)
• Individual minimum performance levels
• Renewable Technologies
If those attending wish to train fully as BER assessors, more extensive training would be required.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this one day course, participants will:
• have a basic understanding of the theory underpinning the DEAP BER calculation method
• be familiar with the DEAP 3.2.1 software and the DEAP 3.2.1 manual
• Understand the 2011 Part L requirements for new & existing dwellings and how these are included in DEAP
• Understand how to use DEAP as a Part L compliance tool
• Have gained practical experience of:
-inputting sample dwelling values into DEAP
-entering renewable technology values into DEAP
-looking at the options for achieving whole dwelling performance compliance
Course Structure:
The programme combines lectures/ presentations and workshop exercises which are split roughly 50:50 in terms of time allocation.
Course Preparation:
Participants are required to bring their own laptop computer to the course with the DEAP software version 3.2.1 pre-loaded (this can be downloaded for free from the SEAI website at http://www.seai.ie/Your_Building/EPBD/DEAP/Download/). Please contact the tharte@riai.ie if you have difficulty accessing a laptop.

Attendees are asked to confirm any special accessibility or other requirements to the RIAI in the field provided on the booking form.

A new Environmental CPD Accreditation was launched by RIAI Education Manager Sandra Campbell at the RIAI Annual Conference in Dublin on 24 September. The aims of the RIAI include the promotion of Architecture and the protection of the Consumer. A high standard of professional competence is maintained by examination prior to admission to the RIAI, a policy of Continuing Professional Development applies to all active members and an extensive service of information and support is offered for all practitioners. The Institute’s involvement with architects and architectural technologists starts when they are students and continues with advice throughout their professional lives.
It is RIAI policy to promote sustainability as an integral part of the practice of architecture. The RIAI is introducing a suite of Continuing Professional Development courses focusing on environmental and sustainable themes. These courses are designed to confirm the position of the architectural profession as the lead profession advising on the environmental aspects of the built environment including technical design and performance, legislation, cost analysis and optimising payback to the client.
The courses are aimed at Architect and Architectural Technologist members of the RIAI. Those who successfully complete two mandatory and one optional course form the RIAI Environmental CPD suite will be entitled to apply for RIAI Environmental CPD Accreditation.
Not all RIAI members and Practices with demonstrated environmental expertise will seek to achieve RIAI Environmental CPD Accreditation. Thus accreditation does not claim to be the sole means of identifying environmental expertise within the profession.
